Cracked screen on 2020 M1 MacBook Air

I have said it a few times on this blog, but it bears repeating, the M1 MacBook Air from 2020 seems to have a more fragile display than the other model MacBook Airs. But in this case, the screen was closed on something that caused the crack in the screen itself.

As you can see in the picture of the damage, the center of the spider web of cracks is where the impact took place. The resulting cracks caused the screen to show lines and bars and splotchy areas with very little of the screen being usable at all. Sometimes people are worried that there is more wrong with their computer than just the LCD panel when the damage looks so extensive on the screen, but this type of damage is just the LCD panel that is cracked.

Display Replacement Vs. LCD Replacement for A2337 MacBook Airs

You have a couple of options available when you are looking to get your 2020 M1 MacBook Air screen repaired. The two main options are to get the entire display assembly replaced, or just the cracked LCD panel replaced.

Replacing the entire display assembly

If you take your MacBook Air to the Apple store (or most repair shops), they will give you the single option of replacing the entire display assembly. The cost of this repair varies, but generally is around $475-$550 for this 2020 M1 model.

This whole display replacement is only necessary if you have warped or damaged housing. In almost all the cases I see, the housing of the display is not warped or damaged, which means I don’t have to replace the whole assembly.

Replacing just the cracked LCD panel

Replacing just the LCD panel means I replace just the part that is broken on your MacBook’s display. If your computer screen looks anything like the one in this picture, all you will need is the LCD replaced to get your computer working 100% again. Mail-in Repair Process

99% of the computers I repair are computers that are mailed to me for repair. I receive computers from all over the country every week and have the process really ironed out. I offer my standard mail-in service as well as a mailing box with return label service.

The standard service is simple; you fill out the quick repair order form, pack your computer up, and ship it to me using any service you would like. The second option is to pay an additional $25 for my shipping box service. If you go this route, I will send you a shipping box with a laptop bubble pouch inside. You slide your computer into the pouch, affix the included FedEx Ground shipping label onto the box, and ship it back to me for repair. The rest of the process is the same… Once I receive the computer, I have it repaired within 24 hours, send you an invoice for the total via email, and pack the computer to ship back.
