For the last few years, the LCD panels used in MacBooks oftentimes go completely black after being cracked. I have clients asking me if there was further damage done to their computer or if the screen is all to blame, and in my experience, it is almost always the screen that is to blame.
Black Screen After Damage
A cracked screen can cause the video feed coming from the computer to be interrupted. This causes the display to light up, but stay completely black. Usually, there is some sign of a crack on the screen, but that is the only sign of life on the computer.
The images below are from an A2337 MacBook screen that was cracked accidentally. The client sent it in for an LCD panel replacement and that is all that it needed.
As you can see in the picture there is an obvious point of impact where the display was damaged (likely being closed on an object on the keyboard).
The impact point is pretty visible in this case, but often times the crack is a hairline crack and is barely visible on the screen. I have even seen cases where the crack is so slight and so close to the edge of the LCD panel that it is not visible at all. In these cases, the screen appears to just be completely black, with the soft glow of the backlight sometimes only noticeable in a dark room.
Screen Repair Options
Even though the screen appears to be black, the computer is fully working. The screen is just not displaying the information the computer is sending to it. In cases like this, I am able to replace just the cracked LCD panel that is the issue and get the computer back up and running properly.
By replacing just the component that is damaged, I am able to offer an affordable alternative to the expensive full display assembly repair.
For this Mac, I was able to replace the LCD panel within 24 hours of receiving the computer. It looked great after the screen repair was completed.
