Sometimes when a screen gets cracked there are multi-colored lines on the display. This MacBook Air came in for a screen repair with these multi-colored lines and nothing else visible on the screen. The client wasn’t sure if there was something else wrong with the computer because they couldn’t see anything working on the display. They mailed the computer to me for repair.
In cases like this, the multi-colored lines show up with a crack mark along the bottom. We can be sure that the LCD panel is the issue with this type of damage. If the lines were uniform and covered the entire screen with no changes, then it is usually the LCD panel, but could be something else wrong with the machine.
Repairing this issue requires replacing the damaged LCD panel. The LCD panel is the part that displays the image. When this part gets cracked or broken, it can do all kinds of things including showing lines as it does in the pictures above. Other common signs of a cracked screen include a completely black screen, a small whitish crack showing but otherwise completely black, or blotches and lines with some of the image still visible.
Once I replaced this MacBook Air’s LCD panel, it was working as good as new again! By replacing just the broken panel I was able to charge a lot less than I would have for replacing the entire display assembly as Apple does. The process of replacing just the LCD panel is more difficult, but worth it in the end with excellent results for less cost.
