This MacBook Air has an issue I see a lot in the 2010-2017 models, a hairline crack on the left-hand side of the display that causes the bottom of the screen to be black or white, and the top part of the screen to have vertical bars or lines.
The small crack that causes this issue is not visible on the screen as it is behind the bezel that surrounds the LCD panel. Once that bezel is removed and the LCD panel is taken out of the display assembly you can clearly see where the crack formed along the left side of the LCD panel. I cover this particular issue more in-depth in a separate blog post.
The pictures below highlight the crack that forms along the edge of the LCD panel. As you can see in the pictures this crack started at the top left-hand side of the display, basically exactly where the white part of the screen started.
I like to post these before and after pictures because a lot of people aren’t sure what is wrong with their computer when their screen just suddenly goes white or black at the bottom as these do. Because there isn’t any cracking visible, a lot of people think they must be having some kind of hardware-based issues like a bad graphics card or a bad logic board.
If your screen looks anything like the one in these pictures, you very likely have a hairline crack along the side of the LCD panel where you can’t see it. It does not matter if the bottom of your screen is white or black or if the top part is working or not, it is all the same issue. I have seen the bottom 10% not working while the top 90% is working, all the way to the bottom 90% not working and the top 10% being just white.
